The Madrid experience according to Marco Antonio and Jan

Junio

Marco Antonio and Jan very much represent the kind of guests I have been able to meet in VillaJardines through airbnb. They communicate in Portuguese, one was born in Zurich, another is a German teacher, the first holds a British passport, the second speaks native Spanish as a foreign language and both live in Frankfurt (Germany). The least I can say about them is that they have chosen to enjoy life in a truly cosmopolitan thermosphere!.

Marco Antonio and Jan chose VillaJardines for their Madrid stay in June 2013.

Marco Antonio and Jan recommend the pastry coffee shop La Mallorquina and the tapas bar Estado puro.

Marco Antonio and Jan recommend the pastry coffee shop La Mallorquina, near Sol, and the tapas bar Estado Puro, in the Barrio de Las Letras.

Marco Antonio and Jan came through airbnb and were truly delightful guests. “Cultivated, well-mannered and always in a fun friendly spirit, it was a delight to have them over at VillaJardines for some days…”. That is only part of my positive evaluation of them as guests and I definitely recommend them as such. At all times, I felt that communication was natural and it is sort of funny to say that I felt a little gloomy when we said goodbye… but it is true. I did.

They enjoyed a superb Madrid experience, so, “as promised, here is our contribution to the blog …”.

“Another recommendation is 'La Mallorquina' at Puerta del Sol”. La Mallorquina is a bakery-café located in the very centre of Madrid, 5 minutes walking from VillaJardines.

Marco Antonio and Jan would like to recommend you two specific places in Madrid: La Mallorquina and Estado Puro and I personally find both perfect as recommendations, as they are part of the exquisite Madrid and both are very popular with locals.

La Mallorquina is a bakery-café located in the very centre of Madrid, at Puerta del Sol, 5 minutes walking from VillaJardines. It is famous for offering typical Madrid pastries since 1894. It started as a coffee shop for political and intellectual gatherings and later became a pastry shop. Its location in the Puerta del Sol, in one of its western corners of Calle Mayor makes it a strategic crossing point.

Today its three street windows show a variety of one of the best culinary confectioners in Madrid. It is very much appreciated by locals, who have been craving for this place for more than 100 years. Google + latest review on this place says: “One of my favourite coffee shops for their products. Whenever I think of their chocolate truffles I bite my lips”. According to Marco and Jan, La Mallorquina is “perfect for a coffee and a lot of calories!”.

On the other hand, the art of tapas in Madrid is one of the most entrenched habits in our native culture. In Estado Puro, the 2 Michelin star chef Paco Roncero praises the Spanish cuisine through innovation and experimentation, though always preserving the traditional roots and ingredients. With him, an improvement of the consecrated tapa can be tasted in all its splendour. The enormous success of Estado Puro has been possible thanks to the great collaboration between Paco Roncero and the NH hotel chain, which runs the restaurant of the Casino de Madrid. The restaurant is not very big, with a total capacity of about 90 people surrounded by imagination and design, not only on the tapas but also in the decoration, both standing out as the main distinguishing features.

Estado Puro is more than a tapas bar. They are so devoted at showing you the Madrid gastronomical experience that they want you to do it as locals do. Please do not miss the quick way to become the champion of any tapas bar. Just follow the humorous instructions here and locals shall surrender at your feet at any tapas bar in Madrid. Estado Puro also has a large terrace with a fun vegetable garden surrounding a tree. Lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes cannot be more natural and fresh than here. “A refined, exquisite food!. Ideal for some tapas after a visit to the Prado!”. The Prado Museum is currently showing an exhibition on “Captive Beauty” (from Fra Angelico to Fortuny). Not to miss.

Thank you Marco Antonio and Jan for visiting VillaJardines and thank you for sharing your secrets about your Madrid experience!

Have a great trip to Japan! 😉
